The Deity of Christ and the New World Translation Pt. 2

Sam Shamoun

We continue from where we left off.

7. Who is the Alpha and Omega, First and the Last, the Beginning and the End who sent his angel to testify to his servants that he is coming quickly?

JEHOVAH

“This is what Jehovah says, The King of Israel and his Repurchaser, Jehovah of armies: ‘I am the first and I am the last. There is no God but me.” Isaiah 44:6 – cf. 41:4; 48:12

“‘I am the Al′pha and the O·me′ga,’ says Jehovah* God, ‘the One who is and who was and who is coming, the Almighty.’” Revelation 1:8

“And he said to me: ‘They have come to pass! I am the Al′pha and the O·me′ga, the beginning and the end. To anyone thirsting I will give from the spring of the water of life free. Anyone conquering will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be my son.’” Revelation 21:6-7

“He said to me: ‘These words are faithful and true; yes, Jehovah*, the God who inspired the prophets, has sent HIS angel to show his slaves the things that must shortly take place. Look! I am coming quickly. Happy is anyone observing the words of the prophecy of this scroll.’” Revelation 22:6-7

* The word Jehovah does not appear in the Greek NT manuscripts, but has been inserted by the translators.

JESUS

“When I saw him, I fell as dead at his feet. And he laid his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last, and the living one, and I became dead, but look! I am living forever and ever, and I have the keys of death and of the Grave.” Revelation 1:17-18

“And to the angel of the congregation in Smyr′na write: These are the things that he says, ‘the First and the Last,’ who became dead and came to life again:” Revelation 2:8

“‘Look! I am coming quickly, and the reward I give is with me, to repay each one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the O·mega, the first and the last, the beginning and the endI, JESUS, sent MY angel to bear witness to you about these things for the congregations. I am the root and the offspring of David and the bright morning star.’… The one who bears witness of these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming quickly. ‘Amen! COME, LORD JESUS.’” Revelation 22:12-13, 16, 20

8. To whom does the Holy Spirit belong, and whose Spirit is he?

JEHOVAH

And you gave YOUR good spirit to give them insight, and you did not hold back your manna from their mouth, and you gave them water when they were thirsty… You extended patience to them for many years and kept warning them by YOUR spirit through your prophets, but they refused to listen. Finally you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.” Nehemiah 9:20, 30

“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will become clean; I will cleanse you from all your uncleanness and from all your disgusting idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit inside you. I will remove the heart of stone from your body and give you a heart of flesh. I will put MY spirit inside you, and I will cause you to walk in my regulations, and you will observe and carry out my judicial decisions.” Ezekiel 36:25-27 – cf. 37:14; 39:29; Psalm 51:11; 104:30; 143:10; Isaiah 11:1-2; 32:14-15; 30:1; 34:16; 40:13-14; 42:1; 44:1-3; 59:19-21; 63:10-11, 14; Joel 2:28-29

“As for me, I am filled with power by the spirit of Jehovah, And with justice and might, To tell to Jacob his revolt and to Israel his sin.” Micah 3:8

“They made their heart like a diamond and would not obey the law and the words that Jehovah of armies sent by HIS spirit through the former prophets. So there came great indignation from Jehovah of armies.” Zechariah 7:12 – cf. 4:6; 6:8; 12:10; 2 Samuel 23:2-3

For all who are led by GOD’S SPIRIT are indeed God’s sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery causing fear again, but you received a spirit of adoption as sons, by which spirit we cry out: ‘Abba, Father!’ The spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are God’s children. If, then, we are children, we are also heirs—heirs indeed of God, but joint heirs with Christ—provided we suffer together so that we may also be glorified together.” Romans 8:14-17

JESUS

“Moreover, they traveled through Phryg′i·a and the country of Ga·la′ti·a, because they were forbidden by the holy spirit to speak the word in the province of Asia. Further, when they came down to Mys′i·a, they made efforts to go into Bi·thyn′i·a, but THE SPIRIT OF JESUS did not permit them.” Acts 16:6-7

“However, you are in harmony, not with the flesh, but with the spirit, if GOD’S SPIRIT truly dwells in you. But if anyone does not have CHRIST’S SPIRIT, this person does not belong to him.  But if Christ is in union with you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is life because of righteousness. If, now, THE SPIRIT OF HIM who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive through HIS SPIRIT that resides in you.” Romans 8:9-11

“But when the full limit of the time arrived, God sent his Son, who was born of a woman and who was under law, that he might release by purchase those under law, so that we might receive the adoption as sons. Now because you are sons, God has sent THE SPIRIT OF HIS SON into our hearts, and it cries out: ‘Abba, Father!’ So you are no longer a slave but a son; and if a son, then you are also an heir through God.” Galatians 4:4-7

“for I know that this will result in my salvation through your supplication and with the support of THE SPIRIT OF JESUS CHRIST.” Philippians 1:19

“About which salvation they sought out and searching out prophets the (ones) about the into YOU underserved kindness having prophesied, searching into what or what sort of appointed time was making evident THE IN THEM SPIRIT OF CHRIST (to en autois pneuma Christou)* witnesses beforehand about the into Christ sufferings and the after these (things) glories; to which (ones) it was revealed that not to themselves to YOU but they were serving them, which (things) now was announced to YOU through the (ones) having declared good news to YOU to spirit holy having been sent forth from heaven, into which (things) are desiring angels to stoop beside.” 1 Peter 1:10-12 The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures: Rendered from the Original Greek Language by the New World Bible Translation Committee, 1985 Edition

* The New World Translation has removed “of Christ” (Christou) from its proper position in their translation, even though the word appears in its correct placement in the very Greek text which they publish and use.

9. Who alone knows all things, including the hearts of all men, and who shall recompense them for what they have done?

JEHOVAH

“then may you hear from the heavens, your dwelling place, and may you forgive and take action; and reward each one according to all his ways, for you know his heart (you alone truly know every human heart),” 1 Kings 8:39

“And you, Sol′o·mon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a complete heart and with a delightful soul, for Jehovah searches through all hearts, and he discerns every inclination of the thoughts. If you search for him, he will let himself be found by you, but if you leave him, he will reject you forever.” 1 Chronicles 28:9 – cf. 1 Samuel 16:7; psalm 44:21

“Look! The Sovereign Lord Jehovah will come with power, And his arm will rule for him. Look! His reward is with him, And the wage he pays is before him. Like a shepherd he will care for his flock. With his arm he will gather together the lambs, And in his bosom he will carry them. He will gently lead those nursing their young.” Isaiah 40:10-11 – cf. 62:11

“I, Jehovah, am searching the heart, Examining the innermost thoughts, To give to each one according to his ways, According to the fruitage of his works.” Jeremiah 17:10 – cf. 11:20; 29:23; Psalm 62:12; Proverbs 17:3; 21:2; 24:12

“So he said to them: ‘You are those who declare yourselves righteous before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is considered exalted by men is a disgusting thing in God’s sight.’” Luke 16:15 – cf. Acts 15:8; Romans 8:27

“By this we will know that we originate with the truth, and we will assure our hearts before him regarding whatever our hearts may condemn us in, because God is greater than our hearts and knows all things.” 1 John 3:20

JESUS

Knowing their thoughts, he said to them: ‘Every kingdom divided against itself comes to ruin, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.’” Matthew 12:25

For the Son of man is to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will repay each one according to his behavior. Truly I say to you that there are some of those standing here who will not taste death at all until first they see the Son of man coming in his Kingdom.” Matthew 16:27-28

“When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic: ‘Child, your sins are forgiven.’ Now some of the scribes were there, sitting and reasoning in their hearts: ‘Why is this man talking this way? He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins except one, God?’ But immediately Jesus discerned by his spirit that they were reasoning that way among themselves, so he said to them: ‘Why are you reasoning these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Get up and pick up your stretcher and walk”? But in order for you to know that the Son of man has authority to forgive sins on earth—‘ he said to the paralytic: ‘I say to you, Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go to your home.’ At that he got up and immediately picked up his stretcher and walked out in front of them all. So they were all astonished, and they glorified God, saying: “We have never seen anything like this.’” Mark 2:5-12

“However, when he was in Jerusalem at the festival of the Passover, many people put their faith in his name when they saw the signs that he was performing. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them because he knew them all and because he did not need to have anyone bear witness about man, for he knew what was in man.” John 2:23-25

“When they heard this, many of his disciples said: ‘This speech is shocking; who can listen to it?’ But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them: ‘Does this stumble you? What, therefore, if you should see the Son of man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that is life-giving; the flesh is of no use at all. The sayings that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the beginning those who did not believe and the one who would betray him.” John 6:60-64

“‘I have spoken these things to you in comparisons. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in comparisons, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. In that day you will make request of the Father in my name; in saying this, I do not mean that I will make request for you. For the Father himself has affection for you, because you have had affection for me and have believed that I came as God’s representative.  I came as the Father’s representative and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and am going to the Father.’ His disciples said: ‘See! Now you are speaking plainly and are not using comparisons. Now we know that you know all things and you do not need to have anyone question you. By this we believe that you came from God.’ Jesus answered them: ‘Do you believe now?’” John 16:25-31

“He said to him a third time: ‘Simon son of John, do you have affection for me?’ Peter became grieved that he asked him the third time: ‘Do you have affection for me?’ So he said to him: ‘Lord, you are aware of all things; you know that I have affection for you.’ Jesus said to him: ‘Feed my little sheep.’” John 21:17

“so that you do not lack in any gift at all, while you are eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also make you firm to the end so that you may be open to no accusation in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:7-8

“Therefore, do not judge anything before the due time, until the Lord comes. He will bring the secret things of darkness to light and make known the intentions of the hearts, and then each one will receive his praise from God.” 1 Corinthians 4:5

“To the angel of the congregation in Thy·a·ti′ra write: These are the things that the Son of God says, the one who has eyes like a fiery flame and whose feet are like fine copper: ‘I know your deeds, and your love and faith and ministry and endurance, and that your deeds of late are more than those you did at first. Nevertheless, I do hold this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jez′e·bel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and misleads my slaves to commit sexual immorality and to eat things sacrificed to idols. And I gave her time to repent, but she is not willing to repent of her sexual immorality. Look! I am about to throw her into a sickbed, and those committing adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds. And I will kill her children with deadly plague, so that all the congregations will know that I am the one who searches the innermost thoughts and hearts, and I will give to you individually according to your deeds.’” Revelation 2:18-23

“‘Look! I am coming quickly, and the reward I give is with me, to repay each one according to his work. I am the Al′pha and the O·me′ga, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.’… The one who bears witness of these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming quickly.’ ‘Amen! Come, Lord Jesus.’ May the undeserved kindness of the Lord Jesus be with the holy ones.” Revelation 22:12-13, 20-21

10. Who alone is the Most High over all the earth, and whose name alone is exalted above everything?

JEHOVAH

“May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You ALONE are the Most High over all the earth.” Psalm 83:18

“Let them praise the name of Jehovah, For his name ALONE is unreachably high. His majesty is above earth and heaven.” Psalm 148:13

“The haughty eyes of man will be brought low, And the arrogance of men will bow down. Jehovah ALONE will be exalted in that day… Man’s haughtiness will be brought down, And the arrogance of men will bow low. Jehovah ALONE will be exalted in that day.” Isaiah 2:11, 17

JESUS

“and how surpassing the greatness of his power is toward us believers. It is according to the operation of the mightiness of his strength, which he exercised toward Christ when he raised him up from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, FAR ABOVE every government and authority and power and lordship and EVERY NAME THAT IS NAMED, not only in this system of things but also in that to come. He also subjected all things under his feet and made him head over all things with regard to the congregation, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills up all things in all.” Ephesians 1:19-23

For this very reason, God exalted him to a superior position and kindly gave him the name that is above every other* name, so that in the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE should bend—of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground—and EVERY TONGUE should openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11

* The word “other” is not in the Greek text but has been inserted by the translators.

11. Who alone shall rule forever as King of all the earth from Zion in Jerusalem? And whose feet shall touch the Mount of Olives when he comes with all his holy ones?

JEHOVAH

“Sing praises to God, sing praises. Sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is King of all the earth; Sing praises, and show insight. God has become King over the nations. God sits on his holy throne.” Psalm 47:6-9

Jehovah will be King forever, Your God, O Zion, for generation after generation. Praise Jah!” Psalm 146:10

“I will make the one who was limping a remnant, And the one far removed a mighty nation; And Jehovah will rule as king over them in Mount Zion, From now on and forever.” Micah 4:7

““Look! The day is coming, a day belonging to Jehovah, when the spoil from you will be divided in your midst. I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem for the war; and the city will be captured and the houses plundered and the women raped. And half of the city will go into exile, but the remaining ones of the people will not be cut off from the city. Jehovah will go out and war against those nations as when he fights in the day of a battle. In that day HIS FEET will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in half, from east to west, forming a very great valley; and half of the mountain will move to the north, and half of it to the south. You will flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains will extend all the way to A′zel. You will have to flee, just as you fled because of the earthquake in the days of King Uz·zi′ah of Judah. And Jehovah my God will come, and all the holy ones will be with him… And Jehovah will be King over all the earth. In that day Jehovah will be one, and his name one… Everyone who is left remaining out of all the nations that come against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to bow down to the King, Jehovah of armies, and to celebrate the Festival of Booths. But if anyone among the families of the earth does not go up to Jerusalem to bow down to the King, Jehovah of armies, no rain will fall on them. And if the family of Egypt does not come up and does not come in, they will have no rain. Instead, they will have the scourge with which Jehovah scourges the nations that do not come up to celebrate the Festival of Booths.” Zechariah 14:1-5, 9, 16-18

JESUS

“[Saying:] ‘I, even I, have installed my king Upon Zion, my holy mountain.’ Let me refer to the decree of Jehovah; He has said to me: ‘You are my son; I, today, I have become your father. Ask of me, that I may give nations as your inheritance And the ends of the earth as your own possession. You will break them with an iron scepter, As though a potter’s vessel you will dash them to pieces.’ And now, O kings, exercise insight; Let yourselves be corrected, O judges of the earth. Serve Jehovah with fear And be joyful with trembling. Kiss the son, that He may not become incensed And YOU may not perish [from] the way, For his anger flares up easily. Happy are all those taking refuge in him.” Psalm 2:6-12 1984 Edition – cf. Acts 13:32-33; Hebrews 1:5; 5:5; Revelation 6:15-17; 11:15; 12:1-2, 5, 10

“This one will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and Jehovah* God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule as King over the house of Jacob forever, and there will be no end to his Kingdom.’” Luke 1:32-33 – cf. Isaiah 9:6-7; Daniel 7:13-14; Matthew 25:31-46; Mark 13:26-27; 14:62

“After he had said these things, while they were looking on, he was lifted up and a cloud caught him up from their sight. And as they were gazing into the sky while he was on his way, suddenly two men in white garments stood beside them and said: ‘Men of Gal′i·lee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus who was taken up from you into the sky will come IN THE SAME MANNER as you have seen him going into the sky.’ Then they returned to Jerusalem from a mountain called THE MOUNT OF OLIVES, which is near Jerusalem, only a sabbath day’s journey away.” Acts 1:9-12

“so that he may make your hearts firm, blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the presence of our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones.” 1 Thessalonians 3:13

“so also the Christ was offered once for all time to bear the sins of many; and the second time that he appears it will be apart from sin, and he will be seen by those earnestly looking for him for their salvation.” Hebrews 9:28

“In fact, in this way you will be richly granted entrance into the everlasting Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:11

* The word Jehovah does not appear in the Greek NT manuscripts, but has been inserted by the translators.

12. Who is the King of kings and Lord of Lords?

JEHOVAH

“For Jehovah your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the God great, mighty, and awe-inspiring, who treats none with partiality and does not accept a bribe.” Deuteronomy 10:17

“Give thanks to the Lord of lords, For his loyal love endures forever.” Psalm 136:3

JESUS

“These will battle with the Lamb, but because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, the Lamb will conquer them. Also, those with him who are called and chosen and faithful will do so.’” Revelation 17:14

“I saw heaven opened, and look! a white horse. And the one seated on it is called Faithful and True, and he judges and carries on war in righteousness. His eyes are a fiery flame, and on his head are many diadems. He has a name written that no one knows but he himself, and he is clothed with an outer garment stained with blood, and he is called by the name The Word of God. Also, the armies in heaven were following him on white horses, and they were clothed in white, clean, fine linen. And out of his mouth protrudes a sharp, long sword with which to strike the nations, and he will shepherd them with a rod of iron. Moreover, he treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his outer garment, yes, on his thigh, he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” Revelation 19:11-16

13. Who receives or takes back the spirits of all those who die?

JEHOVAH

“For a certainty, God does not act wickedly; The Almighty does not pervert justice. Who put him in charge of the earth, And who appointed him over the whole world? If he fixes his attention on them, If he gathers their spirit and breath to himself, All humans would perish together, And mankind would return to the dust.” Job 34:12-15

Into your hand I entrust my spirit. You have redeemed me, O Jehovah, the God of truth.” Psalm 31:5

“Then the dust returns to the earth, just as it was, and the spirit returns to the true God who gave it.” Ecclesiastes 12:7

“And Jesus called out with a loud voice and said: ‘Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.’ After he said this, he expired.” Luke 23:46

JESUS

“After throwing him outside the city, they began stoning him. The witnesses laid down their outer garments at the feet of a young man called Saul. As they were stoning Stephen, he made this appeal: ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Acts 7:58-59
